Although I had the privilege on knowing Mr. Hallman a short period of time he always seemed to care. He meant so much to all of us, he was a special person. There is a quote by George S. Patton Jr that describes Mr. Hallman.
...It is a proud privilege to be a soldier a good soldier
with discipline, self-respect, pride in his unit and his country, a high sense of duty and obligation to comrades and to his superiors, and a self confidence born of demonstrated ability.
Although he is away physically, he will always be in our hearts.

Mrs. Hallman and Family,
I was privelaged to know Eric for the past 25 years as he was a founding partner of Daybrook and active on the Board of Directors until his passing. Eric was insightful, sincere, had a most pleasant sense of humor and just a nice person to be around. Eric would call from time to time just to talk. We had a common interes in classic automobiles.
It was an honor as well as a privelage to have known Eric. I was very sad to learn of his passing and will miss him.
You have my deepest sypathies and are in my thoughts and prayers.

I first came to know Eric in 1992 when the Wallace Group and Daybrook Fisheries merged. My first glimpse of his character showed me his great positive attitude and spirit. He never complained about how the war had left him. He was always keenly interested in our operation, especially the boats. After Hurricane Katrina, his visit to Empire with that same attitude and spirit, in spite of all the devastation, will never be forgotten. Over the years Eric became more than a Director to me, rather he became a true friend. I want his family to know that not only was he very important to the success of our company, his spirit was always an inspiration.
With tears as I write, my deepest sympathies to you.

Dear Penny, Bridget and Samantha,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Your dad was such an important person to me and my family and also as a member of our family business. I will remember him as the very definition of the word Moxie. On the few occasions that I got to have lunch with him in NYC, he always seemed genuinely interested in what I was up to, where I was working, etc. He seemed to really care and always offered up helpful advice. He loved you all deeply and I will miss him very much. Sending love.

ERIC O. HALLMAN
Who was Eric Hallman. When I was in grade school we were required to buy Readers Digest, it was $1.20 per year 10 cent an edition. My favorite part was the section titled the most unforgettable character I ever met. That to me is Eric. He was a green beret, a businessman, a Yachtsman, a world traveler, a expert on everything [and he would let you know it] , but most important he was a loving husband and father, and my best friend. He was unique in many ways, handsome with an infectious smile, the Hallman sense of humor, and an unending love of life. He was a true twentieth century gentlemen who loved cars, women and good food.
I can tell Hallman stories all day but here are a few of my favorites.
The first time Jill and I met Eric we were out to dinner and Jill was sitting next to him. During the course of dinner he casually asked my wife for two thumbtacks. My wife looked at him quizzically not understanding and when he repeated the question she ask why do you need thumbtacks. His reply was to hold up my socks dear, and he backed away from the table and lifted his trouser legs to reveal his prosthetic legs. Our first Ericism.
In 1977 Eric purchased a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, it was the longest car I have ever seen in a maroon with a black roof. He and I decided that we were going to the boat show at the Nassau coliseum and he wanted to drive his new car so he picked me up and off we went. Since we were growing boys we decided to stop at Nathans on Old Country Road for a bite to eat. He parked legally in a handicapped parking spot. As we exited the car some lady started to scream at us that we did not belong parking there. I quickly got back in the car Eric leaned on the car and removed one leg held it up and said to the lady if this is not handicapped enough for you I will sit on the ground and take the other one off.
We all know how fussy Eric was in a restaurant, the food must be perfect and the service impeccable. On one occasion we were having dinner at La Viola in Syosset and the service was terrible. The waiter was ignoring us so to get the waiters attention Eric removed one of his legs and placed it in the aisle next to our table to get the waiters attention. Erics favorite restaurant line was take it back!
My family threw me a cowboy themed fortieth birthday party and of course Eric and Penny were with us. As I was opening my presents Eric presented me with a beautiful Tiffany box perfectly wrapped with a big white bow. I carefully opened the box not wanting to break or scratch anything I said oh shit because the box was filled with fresh horse shit! Eric said this is in honor of your new horse. We all had a good laugh.
There are many boating stories associated with Eric like the time he ran over Execution Rock. But one of my favorites is one of the reasons Penny did not spend too much time on the boat in recent years. Eric Penny and the children came to visit us in Bayville by boat. He moored his boat in front of my house and as I was getting ready to pick them up the boat had an engine fire. Fortunately nothing to serious just a tremendous amount of smoke. I had to rescue Penny and the children. But just like a true captain Eric stayed with the boat, preparing to go down with the ship!
One last Story. I took a group of friends to The Mill River Club for a casino night. Eric liked playing blackjack and pretty women so he and I sat at blackjack table with four women. During the course of play one of the women started to tell jokes to her friends. Well she started telling amputee jokes- the first was what do you call a woman with one leg- the answer was Eileen. Then she asked; what do you call a man with no legs, the answer was Neil. Eric promptly interrupted her and said no!!! its not its Eric! They bantered back and forth until he took her hand and placed it on his legs. She did not know what to do or say and left the table with her friends.
Eric is my most unforgettable friend. I have had tears in my eyes since Penny called me with the sad news of his passing. It is so hard to say good-bye to someone I loved so much. Eric you have filled my heart with love and my mind with unforgettable memories. Jill and I will never forget you we will always love you. Save us a seat at the your favorite table in heaven.
A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
