FAIRMAN--Claire Martin, of Locust Valley, NY passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2011. Claire was born in Cincinnati, the daughter of Helen and Chester Martin, and was a member of the Hillsdale class of 1950. A 1954 graduate of Radcliffe College and past President of the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Long Island, she received Radcliffe's Distinguished Service Award in 2004 on the occasion of her class' 50th reunion, of which she was co-chair. After living in New York City in the early years of her marriage, her family resided in Locust Valley. A devoted community volunteer, she served at various times on the Boards of Planting Fields Foundation, Locust Valley Library, Doubleday-Babcock Senior Center, Save the Children Long Island, and the New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony. She co-founded the Hutton House Lectures at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and retired as Development Officer at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. For many years, she was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club. She will be deeply missed by her loving family: her husband of 51 years, Joel; her children Betsy Weyerhaeuser (David), David (Juliette Zener), and Helen; her sisters Helen and Lynne; and five grandchildren. A celebration of Claire's life will be held at Planting Fields on May 21 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Planting Fields Foundation, 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771.
