Obituary of Lewis T. Voultos

Please share a memory of Lewis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Beloved husband of Thelma. Loving father of Kaylee Engellenner (Bill), Tom (Kathy) and John (Heather). Adored brother of the late Denise. Cherished grandfather of Alexander, James, Ryan, Zachary, Maggie, William, Jacob, Nicholas and Zoe.

Lew was born in Sanford, Maine in 1922 to Mary and Thomas Voultos. He had two older sisters: Denise and Joy. The family tragically lost Joy when she was only 17.

Lew loved music and played the saxophone.  He played in several small bands while attending Colby College.  However, Lew's pursuit of a Bachelor's degree was interrupted by WWII. He served honorably in the Army 135th Infantry Regiment which fought with the Allied forces in Italy. After aggressions in Italy ceased, Lew took the opportunity to take courses at the University of Florence. Once back in the States, he resumed his studies at Colby and finished his degree in 1947. After taking additional courses in Education at the University of New Hampshire, he began teaching at various high schools around New England. In September of 1955, Lew was hired by the Glen Cove School district on Long Island. He met Thelma through mutual friends in 1957. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in July of 1958 and settled as a couple in Glen Cove. Lew received his Masters degree in Botany from CW Post College and was Assistant Principal of the Jr. High for a couple of years before realizing that he missed teaching.  He taught science at the High School and Jr. High School levels until his retirement in 1990.

Lew loved books and could be seen, especially in his retirement, briskly walking to and from the Glen Cove Public Library.  He served on the Advisory Board of the library for several years.  In 2007, Lew and Thelma picked up stakes and moved to Raleigh, NC. They have most recently resided in Smithtown, NY.

Arrangements for Lew are as follows: Visitation on Wednesday, July 5 from 2:00 - 4:00pm and 7:00 - 9:00pm. Funeral Service on Thursday, July 6 at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Locust Valley Cemetery.
