Rick and I became close very fast. He was an amazing soul. He and I had the loudest laughs and when we were together, for that short but precious time, it was fabulous. I truly can't believe he's gone. We will never get our chance to see what the future held for us. I know it would have been truly something great. My heart goes out to his family, and especially to Moose.

Rick was such a positive guy and I was looking forward to riding bikes with him again this year or next. His tenure as a bicycle builder left a lasting impression--I think of Rick every time I ride the bike he made for me! Sending lots of love from the local bicycle community. Condolences to everyone that had the pleasure of being closer to him than I was.

I always dreamed one day I’d have Rick build me a frame. I always imagined he’d be too busy to make me one, not that he’d be gone. It was cool watching as he developed his skills and got better equipment. All I got was a T shirt and it’s been a favorite, and now holds an even more special meaning. Such an asset to the cycling community and such a tragic loss to anyone lucky enough to have met him.

Rick and I logged substantial time together as young nomadic skateboarding knuckleheads, consuming Jolt Cola, and religiously waxing various curbs and ledges around town for board slides. Later on we spent a summer constructing a BMX track in some woods off Red Spring Lane that now I believe are homes. Among my most glowing memories, chasing behind him on a bike, huffing and puffing to keep up as he effortlessly bunny hopped garbage cans. The experience equivalent to befriending Spider-Man. Rick defined himself. He was Punk Rock before we actually knew what that meant. I am profoundly grateful to have shared in his devastating humor and ate his dust. My love and deepest sympathy to your family.

What a tragic loss! People as nice as Rick are in very short supply. While I only knew Rick from the bike shop, he was on my list of favorite people. I always enjoyed seeing him. My heart goes out to his parents.

Our greatest condolences to the Jones family and Sharon Stillwagon. My husband Ned and I first met each other on the same ski trip where we met Rick, and Sharon, in Taos, NM over a decade ago. We were instantly connected and became a foursome on many adventures, in all seasons, enjoying the outdoors and traveling together. Rick and Ned shared interests in motorcycles and engines in general - they spent many hours working together on our boat motors in particular.
This is such a tragic loss in so many ways, but especially for the family. Rick had lots of friends and was so involved in the community that there will be many many people keeping his memory alive. I will forever think of him on the slopes, on tele skis, imitating the clarinet in pure enjoyment of the snow and mountains. We love you Rick and will never forget you. Caroline & Ned Houghton

I was always so happy to visit RoadRunners because I was spending time for myself and my passion: Cycling.
However I believe that Rick and his family and the advice they offered was what kept me coming back.
He was truly an Expert and so many of us relied upon him.
Rest in peace. Tom Reagan

I and deeply saddened to learn of this terrible loss. Such a kind, knowledgeable and gregarious human being. I always enjoyed our conversations about all things bikes and BMW's at the bike shop with Rick and Dick. I've always relied on his expertise and candor when making a bike related or some technical decision. I am fortunate to know the man and be the honored custodian of one of his superlative creations. I am proud to own it and will say a prayer each time we ride, knowing in some small way Rick is with me.

Oh man, what a shock. What a tragic loss. I can't imagine what you guys are going through.
I don't need to tell you what a fantastic person Rick was. Of course he was an extremely talented technician, but he was also kind and generous and incredibly good natured.
I don't think that I ever met anybody with a greater thirst for knowledge. He was a walking dictionary of technical information. For the last few years I had been bringing Rick in as a guest TIG welding instructor for our machine shop classes at Webb Institute. I knew that he was a great welder and I was very pleased to discover that he had a natural gift for teaching. The kids all loved him, and I think that he really enjoyed doing it.
I know that you will never stop grieving for Rick, and I don't think that I will either. I'll be holding you all in my thoughts.
A friend of mine has a bumper sticker that says "Be the person that your dog thinks you are". That's a pretty lofty goal, but I think that Rick was just as good and kind to all of us as he was to his beloved Moose.
