Iver Roslund
January 28, 1919 – December 1, 2020
ROSLUND, Iver - lifelong resident of Locust Valley, born in a house on High Street, passed away on December 1, 2020 in his 102nd year.
He was the fifth of six children of Iver Roslund Sr. and Ellen Simensen who came from Norway to the USA in 1913.
Iver attended Locust Valley school up to the 8th grade and then went to Glen Cove High School (as LV had no high school) where he was an honor student and graduated in 1937. During this time, he also was a Boy Scout.
Iver first worked for the Nassau-Suffolk Lumber Yard in LV. In March 1942 during WWII, he entered the Army and attended OCS and rose to the rank of Captain in the Field Artillery under General George Patton. Iver landed on Omaha Beach five days after D-Day and was part of the “breakout” in the European theater. He was in charge of men firing the Howitzer which was the most powerful weapon deployed by the artillery. Iver also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
In January 1946, he and his brothers, Ossie and Henry, took over the family business which became Roslund Brothers Inc., builders of high-end homes on the Gold Coast of LI as well as renovating local landmarks such as Caminari’s and Twin Harbors restaurants along with building the gazebo for Planting Fields exhibit at the NYC Flower show. After a very successful business career, Iver retired in 1982.
At 18, Iver joined the Locust Valley Fire Department and was a proud and dedicated member for 83 years, serving the Locust Valley community and helping with the LVFD blood drive. He was Ex-Captain and treasurer for 40 years of Engine Co. No. 2 and in 2012 became Honorary Chief of LVFD. Iver was the Grand Marshall in three parades.
In 1938, Iver met the love of his life Ruth E. Hicks. They were married on September 5, 1943 at the Reformed Church in Manhasset and celebrated 73 years of marriage before Ruth’s passing in 2016. Iver built his family a house in Locust Valley moving into it in 1948 and lived there for 72 years.
Iver was an active 68 year member of the Locust Valley Reformed Church, serving 12 years on the Consistory, over 30 years on the Buildings and Grounds Committee and was Co-President with Ruth of the Mr. & Mrs. Club.
In addition, Iver was a Boy Scout leader, life member of the Carpenters Union and member of the Locust Valley Senior Citizens Club and the Life Enrichment/Oyster Bay Senior Center.
Iver and Ruth loved to travel taking cruises and trips across the USA and visiting over 25 countries. He and Ruth forged many friendships and bonds throughout the years.
Iver is the loving father of Robert (Patricia) and Cynthia (Wilfred Robbins). The proud grandfather of Heather, Robert Jr. (Rebecca Mulyca), Holly Boginski, Erik Robbins (Erica) and Evan Robbins and Great Grandfather of Alexandra Mulyca.
