Obituary of John A. Stanco

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Stanco, John A. of Richmond, VA, formerly of Glen Cove, NY on December 11, 2021 at age 72.

A long-term resident of Glen Cove, New York, who retired to Richmond VA and opened an Italian restaurant, Buon Amici, his pride and joy in Williamsburg, VA voted best pizza in Williamsburg every year, has passed away at the age of 72 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Born in Sturno, Italy John, Giovanni Antonio Stanco, came to the states in 1954 with his parents, Angelo and Concetta and joined later by brothers Lester and Domenick Stanco to find a better life. And they did.

His talent in sports was his passport to success. He earned a full-tuition sports scholarship to CW Post College, where he captained football and lacrosse teams and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

After opening his own insurance and real estate business in Glen Cove, he was active in the political and community affairs of the city for many years.

Golf was his passion. From his early days of caddying at Locust Valley Country Club to his membership at Brookville County Club, he played golf with the same intensity and competitive spirit that he displayed when playing college sports. Nicknamed "Moose" from childhood, he plowed through opponents with courage and passion.

A gourmet cook and amateur sommelier, John was famous for his infused oils and home-made limoncello, made with his "secret recipe".

Beloved for his warmth, his decency, his sense of humor and acceptance of others, he leaves behind his wife, Kathleen and daughter, Dr. Kahley Stanco.

Due to Covid restrictions, all attendees must wear masks and maintain appropriate distance.

Visiting will take place at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home of Glen Cove on Thursday December 16th from 9:30-10:30am.  Followed by a Mass at the Church of St. Rocco on Thursday at 11am.  He will be interred in the Stanco Family plot at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Donations can be made to Parkinson's Foundation to bring about more research for this disease.
