Obituary of Ruby Marie Murray

Please share a memory of Ruby to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ruby Marie Murray passed away on Friday, May 13, 2022 in Oyster Bay, NY.  Ruby was born on September 15, 1958 in Glen Cove, NY to Mary Elizabeth Evans-Covington and Rufus Lee Evans, becoming the fourth daughter of seven siblings.  She referred to herself as “THE MIDDLE BLESSED ONE” and often smiled and laughed while saying it.

Ruby was full of life and good energy.  She had a love for telling good old-fashioned stories that would have friends and family laughing so hard while holding their stomach.  She also enjoyed watching her movies, and then debating with her sisters about each and every outcome before they can even watch it.  Ruby had the gift of gab.  No matter where she went people just gravitated towards her.

Ruby was very adventurous and not afraid to travel by herself.  She enjoyed worshiping and singing in church with her family and friends.  She received Christ at an early age and was an active long-time sanctuary choir member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Ralph Whitfield.  Ruby later continued her worship attending Hood AME Zion Church of Oyster Bay, NY.

As a 1977 High School Graduate from Oyster Bay High School, Ruby was very focused on the African-American awareness celebrations and also loved participating in parades, dance performances, among other black history celebrations during her high school years.

Ruby planned her future around her love for cooking and received special certified training in food services.  She worked with gratification for Palls Corporation in Glen Cove, then Oyster Bay Foodtown, Stop & Shop stores, and eventually the bakery department until she was unable to work and had to remain at home.  However, she continued to be an amazing mom.  As a single mother, Ruby dedicated her life to her children, raising her daughter Everry Denise Watson and being there to assist with raising granddaughter Desavia.

Ruby eventually met the love of her life and married the late Roosevelt Murray in 1993 and from this union, she was blessed with a son, Travis Murray.  Ruby thanked GOD often for her life and time she had with her very caring husband and being able to witness both of her children and oldest grandchild accomplish graduating from high school.  She was also filled with joy to see her daughter marry Travis Watson and celebrate the birth of their two additional daughters.

Everyone knew Ruby’s smile of confidence, never relied on material things.  She believed her heavenly treasures is God’s will.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents Mary Elizabeth Evans-Covington and Rufus Lee Evans, uncle Oscar Green, and husband Roosevelt Murray.

Ruby leaves to cherish her loving memory daughter Everry (Travis) Watson, son Travis Murray, granddaughters Desavia, Zalaya, and Zienna, sisters Denise (Michael) Yeargin, Mary (Kim) Walker, Beverly (Trent) Levine, Barbara Ann Gibson, Diane M. (Leroy) Jones, brother Rufus Lee Evans, aunts Laura Gilliard, Viola Carter, and Carol Green, uncle James K. (Martha) Green, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, including her close friend Wendy Stewart.
